In her letter to the New York Times dated May 13th 2012 (Letters: Logic and the Mandate), Professor Tara Smith reminds us of the important difference between the fallacy of the slippery slope, and thoroughly exploring the applications of a specific principle when that same principle is used as the justification for an action.
The slippery slope is one of the most widely over-diagnosed fallacies for this reason, and its misapplication is a pet peeve of mine, so I’m glad to see Prof. Smith setting the record straight on Thaler’s column.
